NOTE: This assignment has three parts. Please submit the assignment after completing all three parts.

It may take you some time to finish the work, please save the draft, Moodle also has an auto save feature, so you can complete the assignment in more than one sitting. Assignment grading is done only once. Please write title and copy/paste questions. (5 Points)

Part 1: Organic Macromolecule Structure & Practice: 39 Points

A: Organic Macromolecule Structure:

Watch the following video.  In this video, you will review many of the things that you learned about proteins, lipids, and carbohydrates in the previous lesson and can add details to your chart.

Focus especially on the STRUCTURE of these molecules while you are watching this video. Draw a basic model of each of the molecules on your chart.

Do! Describe what nucleic acids,  proteins, lipids, and carbohydrates have in common structurally and how they are different or how you can tell them apart if you were looking at them under an amazing microscope. Use academic language such as monomers, similar chemical makeup, or what structural changes make them dissimilar? Think about: What are the building blocks called? What actually makes each macromolecule look different? What parts are different for each molecule?

You can use a numbered list or write a paragraph or two. We are expecting proper English, which includes: capitals, punctuation, and well-formed sentences. It is always a good idea to reread and edit your work before you decide it is ready to submit it to your teacher. 5 Points

B: Organic Macromolecule Practice:

In this assignment, you will read information about macromolecules and answer questions.  Below are the direct links to the page and what questions you will answer.

  • Chem4Kids:  Sweet Sweet Carbs (questions 1-6)

  • Chem4Kids:  Many Forms of Lipids (questions 7-12)

  • Chem4Kids:  Building Proteins with Amino Acid Chains (questions 13-15)

  • Chem4Kids:  The Nucleic Acids (questions 16-17)

Questions:

Do! Each question is 2 points and please explain your answer in detail. 34 Points

  1. Why is sugar considered an organic compound?

  2. Where in the cell are sugars broken down to create the energy compound called ATP?

  3. What is the difference between a monosaccharide, disaccharide, and a polysaccharide? Give examples of each.

  4. What are the three elements found in all sugars? (Hint: look at the diagram of glucose if you need help).

  5. According to the web site what do potatoes, wood, and lobster shells have in common?

  6. Why are lipids considered an organic compound?

  7. Waxes are examples of lipids. Describe how bees, humans, and plants all use waxes.

  8. Steroids are also lipids. Describe why steroids can be harmful if used illegally.

  9. Contrast unsaturated and saturated fats (how are they different?)

  10. What happens when your body contains excess sugar?

  11. What are proteins made up of?

  12. List the different types of protein structure. (Provide at least two different shapes.)

  13. Hemoglobin is an important human protein. Where is it found?

  14. Please list two nucleic acid examples.

  15. Where did scientists first find nucleic acids in the cell?

  16. Where else have nucleic acids been found?

  17. What are the three parts of a nucleotide?

Part 2: Organic Macromolecule Video: 20 Points

Do! Watch the videos and write at least 100 words summary of each video. Explain in detail and produce quality work in order to earn full points.

  1. Carbohydrates 5 Points
  2. Lipids 5 Points
  3. Proteins 5 Points
  4. Nucleic Acids  5 Points

Part 3: Organic Macromolecule Vocabulary Practice: 1 Point

How well do you understand the new vocabulary introduced in this section?  Practice by playing the scatter game on Quizlet for this list of terms.

Do! Take a screenshot when you finish and attach it here.  See example below.
